SUV Program Paused - No New Applications
Canada's Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program is officially PAUSED. No new applications are being accepted as of Jan 1, 2026. IRCC is preparing a new targeted pilot program expected later this year.
- ▹Status: CLOSED to new applicants.
- ▹Existing Commitment Certificates (2025): Must submit PR application by June 30, 2026.
- ▹Work Permits: New applications halted. Extensions may be possible for existing holders.
- ▹Reason: Addressing backlog and program misuse to launch a more effective system.
LICO (Proof of Funds) Increased
The Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) table has been updated by IRCC. The required settlement funds for families have increased significantly. Please verify your bank balance against the 2025 table before submission.
3-Year Open Work Permit
Startup Visa applicants (Essential Members only) are now eligible for a 3-year Open Work Permit, replacing the previous 1-year Closed Permit.
- ▹Validity extended from 1 to 3 years.
- ▹Changed from Closed (Employer-specific) to Open Work Permit.
- ▹Pending applicants can withdraw and re-apply under the new rule.
Peer Reviews Paused Indefinitely
IRCC has officially paused the industry 'Peer Review' process. This removes a major bottleneck in the processing timeline.
Application Cap Introduced
Minister Marc Miller announced new caps to address the application backlog:
- ▹Limit of 10 startups per Designated Organization per year.
- ▹Priority processing for 'Capital-Backed' ventures (VC/Angel).
- ▹These caps remain effective until the end of 2026.
